IAIN’s LOCKDOWN WALKS No. 28 THE LAWFORDS

Walk starts from the car park of the Newbold Quarry Nature Reserve off Egerton Drive, Newbold on Avon, CV21 1AY (to your left at sharp right-hand bend in Egerton Drive). NB a torch is recommend for the canal tunnel.
1. From the car park head south-west into open area then head diagonally right to a wood. Follow well-defined path up thru this wood to emerge in an open area with views across the flooded quarry. Continue along path and descend some steps to reach the shores of the lake, follow this to a disabled parking area and exit and turn left into Avonmere. Once Newbold Road is reached turn right and at cross roads continue straight ahead, pass shops on your left and Barley Mow on right then up hill and at bend cross the road carefully to St Botolph’s churchyard. Walk along the path towards the church then take right-hand path to the right of the church and exit churchyard right thru kissing gate. Follow well defined path between avenue of trees to kissing gate and bridge over abandoned arm of canal, continue ahead and exit onto farm track via kissing gate and go thru bridge under WCML railway line. Take gate on your right, following waymarker across field to bridge over the River Avon, with metal gates at either end.
2. Head to kissing gate in hedge, across the middle of the next field to another kissing gate then straight ahead towards the back of some houses. Go thru kissing gate, turn left then almost immediately right down an alleyway to emerge at a green. Continue ahead along Ashman Avenue a short distance and take narrow alleyway right between Nos. 45 and 47. Go thru kissing gate and straight across field to bridge across ditch with gates at either end. Head diagonally left towards left-hand end of farm building and a metal gate into churchyard and then shortly afterwards right towards and past St John’s church, Long Lawford then thru lychgate and turn right onto Chapel Street.
3. After short distance take bridleway located between metal gate on left and farm entrance on right. Proceed along this well-defined path between fences, which joins farm track to cross the River Avon, through Little Lawford Mill and straight ahead to wooden bridge with stiles at both ends. Cross field diagonally left to exit via stile at road junction and walk about 100m left along Little Lawford Lane then turn right into lane signposted Harborough Magna. Walk along this lane for about 950m, crossing over the WCML railway line again and take Cathiron Lane right signposted Lime Farm Marina. Continue past marina and upon reaching skew bridge No. 44 over Oxford Canal take steps on right down to the towpath (take care as the steps can be slippery). Turn right along the towpath, cross wrought iron bridge over abandoned arm of canal and go under bridge then thru Newbold tunnel, under Green Bridge by Barley Mow and about 240m beyond the next bridge (Brownsover Road) re-enter the other side of the nature reserve from the towpath. Upon reaching fence turn left and follow the path around the flooded quarry back to the car park.
8.5 km (5.3 miles) 3 stiles Iain Wells.
