IAIN’s LOCKDOWN WALKS No. 29

FRADLEY JUNCTION and ALREWAS

Walk starts from the car park (cost £1.50 all day) of the Canal & River Trust, Hay End Lane, Fradley Junction, DE13 7DN (from Fradley turn left immediately before hump-back canal bridge). Visitor centre, café and toilets by car park.

  1. From visitor centre walk west along towpath of Trent and Mersey Canal and after short distance cross over Bridge 51 by Lock 17 and turn right along road for short distance. Enter Wildlife Park on your left and on reaching reservoir turn right and follow footpath around reservoir until the end of the far side then head along path heading approximately north-west. Upon reaching boundary fence of static caravan park turn right, cross stile and follow well-defined path to field gap then diagonally left across field to opposite field boundary then follow this to reach access road. Turn left and keep farm buildings on your right as road turns right, continue with pond on your right, then straight ahead along track with field boundary on your left. At end of second field go straight ahead thru hedge gap and metal gate then turn immediately right to follow field boundary. At corner turn left and follow this field boundary, go thru metal gate and just before end of next field take metal gate on your right, cross ditch then turn briefly left then right to follow left-hand boundary hedge to join track by house.

  1. Follow this track to A513, cross over with care, and take road ahead towards Orgreave (not the one made famous by the Miners’ Strike!), after short distance you will arrive at minor cross roads with redundant bus shelter on your left (handy place for a short break or shelter from rain!). Turn right towards ornate metal gates and take righthand one onto access road. Follow this road past Orgreave Hall (Grade II listed) on your left and continue ahead across field towards trees and join track with gas pumping and distribution centre on your right. Continue on this tarred track thru Overley and where it turns sharply right by house and farm buildings, continue ahead along grassy track, then on same heading along right-hand field boundary. Upon nearing the backs of houses in Alrewas cross ½ height stile onto footbridge and shortly afterwards on reaching Mill End Lane turn right. Continue to T-junction and turn left into Church Road and enter churchyard of All Saints church.

  2. Exit from churchyard through lychgate and turn left back onto Mill End Lane and on reaching canal go thru metal gate on your left and turn right along towpath of the Trent and Mersey canal*. Continue on the towpath back to Bridge 50 and Lock 16. You can either leave canal at this point and take the access road to the car park or continue along towpath to Bridge 51 and Lock 17 to partake of refreshments at The Swan before crossing the bridge back to the car park.

*On date of survey the canal towpath beyond Bridge 49 was closed for repairs. Alternative route: leave canal at this point, go over the bridge and turn right down track, under A513 then take footpath left along field boundary and exit via stile onto Daisy Lane, which becomes Sale Lane at sharp left-hand bend, for about 2.2km, go straight over at cross-roads onto Gorse Lane and shortly before canal bridge join Coventry Canal and turn right along towpath to return to Fradley Junction.
